Over the last few decades, we have lived through the height of the information age – where technological advancement has continued to exponentially accelerate and evolve, and where all of humanity’s collective knowledge has become widespread and freely available to people from all walks of life.

While this is an incredible blessing, it is also a bit of an insidious double-edged sword.

With this continued expansion comes the danger of falling behind, failing to pivot, and being replaced.

If you’re not careful and observant, by the time you realize you need to adapt, it will already be too late.

You’ll have been swept away by the raging torrent of hyper-paced change and innovation that has become commonplace in our world, and that will continue to fundamentally shift how society functions and the way we live our lives on a day-to-day basis.

To make sure you’re able to surf the torrent rather than drown in it, you have to develop an awareness that helps you to get ahead of the curve.

To do this, you need to be able to position yourself in a way that allows you to take advantage of what exists right beyond the horizon – to start acting towards where we’re headed instead of where we are.

Because the next age isn’t coming a century, a decade, or even a year from now – it’s already here.

You’re currently standing on the precipice of a new epoch – An age defined not by information, but by imagination.

And in today’s article, I want to help you prepare so you can not only survive in the Imagination Age – but thrive in it.

Where we’ve been – the Information Age

The Information Age has been defined by the unprecedented access to data, knowledge, and communication afforded to us by the advent of digital devices, the internet, and having the ability to learn about or understand anything of interest – all literally available at your fingertips.

Like the name suggests, this is the era that democratized information – enabling individuals to learn, create, and connect at an unprecedented global scale.

Thanks to this borderless and frictionless accessibility, we’ve seen incredible changes happen right before our eyes.

Changes like:

  • Hyperspeed advancement in technology that has forever altered the ways we live, connect, and communicate

  • The rise of the gig economy and the ability for an individual to make a living predicated on their interests, passions, and values, and the transition from a purely physical commodity based economy to an intellectual and information-based economy

  • An unraveling of entrepreneurial barriers to entry, where anyone with a cell phone, laptop, and an internet connection can build a thriving business within a vast multitude of fields and disciplines

However, as we reach an inflection point in the Information Age, we find ourselves grappling with its consequences.

We experience information overload and analysis paralysis, having so much available to us that we feel as though we are drowning in a sea of options.

We have to deal with privacy concerns and come to terms with the fact that we now have a digital identity online as real as our physical offline identity.

We can’t help but sense a perceived erosion of intimacy and meaning, where our social bonds and experience of life and what it means to be human have become so digitized that they can often feel commoditized.

It is in this context that we must look beyond the Information Age and seek new ways of thinking and living that will help us not only navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving, rapidly changing world, but keep pace with that evolution and change – without losing ourselves in the process.

We must look towards The Imagination Age.

Where we are – the Imagination Age

As the Information Age reaches its zenith, we are witnessing the emergence of the Imagination Age – and in many respects, we are already well within it.

This age is signified by a paradigm shift in which innovationvalue creation, and self actualization are front and center on the world stage of progress.

The Imagination Age transcends the limitations of the Information Age, emphasizing the unique qualities that set us apart as humans: our capacity for creativity, empathy, and the ability to envision a better future.

There are three key factors that are driving this shift, and being aware of them is the first step to being able to utilize them to your advantage:

  1. Technological reality warping: All technological innovation is Man’s attempt to close the gap between what is imagined and made real within the world. As technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality continue to accelerate, so too will our ability to conceive of and actualize ideas.

If the information age is defined by the democratization of information, the imagination age will be defined by the democratization of creative and productive ability.

In the very near future, what now takes entire teams and millions of dollars to produce (blockbuster films, triple A games, groundbreaking software, etc) will soon be creatively accessible to a teenager with an internet connection.

  2. The Neo-Renaissance: This time in history will be looked back on as a golden era of progression and development – from mathematics, engineering, and science to art, philosophy, and spirituality.

To fully embrace this is to embrace the fact that we are moving deeper and deeper into a world where one’s ability to think and act creatively, intuitively, and innovatively are necessary to thrive and succeed.

The Imagination Age calls for a new approach to problem-solving, one that embraces the power of imagination, human ingenuity, and an open mind in order to solve problems and overcome the challenges we individually and collectively face.

  3. The Purpose-Centric Economy: As automation and artificial intelligence continue to enhance and augment productive and creative output, we must redefine what it means to add value to the world at large.

We will need to make a shift towards a world where one’s greater sense of purpose and nuance as a unique individual exists at the center of how one contributes to society.

In the Imagination Age, a focus on experiences and environments that foster well-being, collaboration, and personal growth must be prioritized.

The above shifts suggest profound implications for the global landscape, but what does it mean for you and the way you live and approach life?

Let’s look at how these general shifts will create change in more specific areas of human endeavour, experience, and existence – so you can understand how to better engage these areas in both the present and the future:

  • EducationThe way in which you approach learning will need to be deliberate and intentional. The Imagination Age calls for a shift in focus from knowledge acquisition, memorization, and regurgitation to a focus on creative thinking, emotional understanding, and collaborative skill development.

Embrace interdisciplinary learning, and foster the ability to draw connections between both related and seemingly unrelated fields of study so that inspiration, insight, and unique idea cultivation can take place.

  • Work and Entrepreneurship: The Imagination Age will redefine the nature of work and entrepreneurship, as creative problem-solving and out-of-the-box approaches to challenges become increasingly valuable. In this new landscape, individuals and organizations must be agile, adaptable, and willing to take risks.

Traditional career paths and organizational structures will give way to more fluid, project-based work where you’ll have the freedom to leverage your unique gifts, talents, interests, curiosities, and values.

Entrepreneurship will flourish in the Imagination Age, as more people harness their creative potential to develop new products, services, and experiences that cater to the evolving needs and desires of society on an individual and collective level.

Specialized generalists will reign supreme, aim to act as a modern day neo-polymath – become world class in 1-2 primary skills, and develop an arsenal of interrelated supplementary skills that amplify your aforementioned gifts, talents, interests, curiosities, and values.

  • Mental and Emotional Well-being: The Imagination Age will place a greater emphasis on mental and emotional well-being, as we collectively wake up to the importance of nurturing our inner selves to unlock our creative potential and innate gifts.

This shift will require you to develop habits, routines, and rituals that foster mindfulness, self-awareness, and emotional resilience. By cultivating inner peace and harmony with yourself, you’ll be able to better navigate the complexities of the Imagination Age and tap into the wellspring of creativity that lies within each of us.

  • Collective Collaboration: The challenges of the Imagination Age will necessitate increased collaboration and cooperation on a global scale. It becomes imperative that you seek out your tribe and work together with others on the same or a similar journey as yourself to find creative, innovative solutions.

The Imagination Age will require you to forge new partnerships, transcend borders, and embrace a collective sense of responsibility for the well-being of our planet and our people.

How to thrive in the Imagination Age

Finally, you need to understand how to thrive in the Imagination Age by embodying the perspectives, philosophies, and practices that will help you make this ever evolving, ever-changing, unpredictable transition as smooth, advantageous, and prosperous as it possibly can be.

None of us can know what the next 10 years hold, and while we can predict with a relative degree of confidence and accuracy some of the changes that will take place, there are sure to be many that none of us can forsee or expect.

All you can do to prepare is improve your ability to respond and adapt to the changing circumstances and landscape, and embracing the following will help you do it successfully:

  • Commit to lifelong learning: You must make learning a priority and a lifelong pursuit. As the pace of change accelerates, you have to be capable of continually acquiring new skills, knowledge, and perspectives to stay ahead of the curve and keep pace with the shifts.

Embrace curiosity, be open to new experiences, and commit to cultivating a growth mindset through intentional and deliberate learning practice.

  • Accept Uncertainty: The future is more uncertain and ambiguous than it’s ever been, because we have no frame of reference for what the world we’re headed towards looks like.

Rather than resist this uncertainty, you have to be willing to accept it and find comfort in not having all the answers. By developing a tolerance for this ambiguity, you can remain open to new possibilities and will be more adaptable in the face of change.

  • Cultivate Your Creativity: Creativity is the lifeblood of the Imagination Age. Nurture your creative instincts by engaging in activities that challenge your imagination, such as art, music, writing, or other forms of creative expression.

This is why creating content and building a personal brand and online business is one of the most beneficial things you can spend your time and energy doing today, because it allows you to fully embody your creative energy and positions you for maximizing prosperity, opportunity, and optionality within the Imagination Age.

  • Foster Empathy and Compassion: The Imagination Age calls for a greater emphasis on empathy and compassion, both towards yourself and others. By cultivating these qualities, you’ll build stronger connections, foster collaboration, and create more inclusive, equitable societies – both online and offline.

  • Cultivate Inner Well-being: Lastly, you must prioritize your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. These energies serve as the foundation upon which your creativity and potential will flourish, and the more in-tune you are with them, the better.

Engage in practices, activities, and experiences that nurture your self-awareness and help you to know yourself on a more intimate level.

The transition from the Information Age to the Imagination Age represents a profound shift in our understanding of what it means to be human in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

By embracing and applying the principles and suggestions outlined above, you’ll equip yourself with the tools needed to navigate the unexplored waters of the Imagination Age – allowing you to chart a course towards a more prosperous, equitable, and fulfilling future for yourself and others.
